Configuring W2K server

D

Dave

Hi

I'm trying to figure out how to install Windows 2000 Server as a domain
controller following a guide on MS's site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/server/serversteps.asp
When I follow the guide and select "This is the only server in my
network" in the configure wizard, I get the error: "Because one of more
other servers already exist, you cannot configure this server as the
only server on the network." So far, all I have are two PCs - one
running W2K server and one running W2K Pro - connected via a Netgear
DG834 ADSL router. I understand that the other server is the router,
which, according to ipconfig, seems to be the Default Gateway, DHCP
Server and DNS Server too.

My question is, how are the server and router supposed to work together?
Do I have DHCP on the router or the server? If W2K server has to have
DNS, how does this work alongside the DNS on the router?

Advice or links greatly appreciated.

The first thing that I would do, if I were in your shoes, would be to get
DNS and DHCP up and running on the server that you intend to use as your
domain controller. In a Windows 2000 AD domain a good DNS infrastructure is
essential, and DHCP is important. Disable DHCP on the router and let your
server handle it. Lock your future domain controller on a convenient
network address that fits into the addressing scheme you intend to use.

Second, you CANNOT say that this is the only server on your network if there
is already one present. You MUST answer that one or more servers are
already present, since this is a fact. If you answer this question
correctly, and if you have DNS and DHCP up and running on the server that
you intend to promote to domain controller, the rest will fall into place
rapidly.
