got a w2k DC and 5 computers; also got a leased line with a router; out
of 5 WS 2 are xp and others are win98;

the problems is as follows:

to make net available in the TCP/IP IP of DNS is put (outside ISP's
IP) login is fast but we don't get the server;(but we can ping) DC is
with DNS and DHCP; recently we'd to change the IP address of server; we
uninstalled DHCP and DNS and reconfigured; still not getting the
server; at last we put IP ref in hosts file and it works! but how and
why!? help appreciated

DNS of your DC should go in the client TCP/IP properties, not the DNS your
ISP provided.

yes but we want to make available to the clients the internet; in the
TCP/IP properties we specify gateway as router IP and in DNS specify
the ISP; this works fine somewhere else; that's what make us surprised;
normally we have seen XP take very long time to login if we specify
outside DNS IP but it never fails the shared resources in the DC; now
wdon't get the server but login is very fast;

Your DNS server will provide name resolution to your clients. You don't need
the ISP DNS in the client. If you put it there, you will/may not be able to
reach internal resources (like printers and other LAN machines).

A correctly configured Active Directory network has all clients using the
domain DNS server(s) as their only server(s) to resolve addresses. The
domain DNS server(s) should be using either forwarding to your ISP's servers
or root hint servers to resolve all non-domain addresses.

Setting it up any other way, including putting the ISP's DNS server on the
clients, is going to seriously impede the ability of Active Directory to
work.

i would have ur points calrified; our purpose of putting outside DNS IP
is just to make available the internet; this works fine elsewhere and
we are able to get the server resources; in this case we don't that's
what surprise us
help appreciated
thanks

It shouldn't come as a surprise - if you use outside DNS to resolve names,
the outside DNS server won't be able to direct clients inside your network
and that will cause problems. You need to set it up as I suggested. Have
all clients use the DNS server inside your network (and ONLY that DNS
server) to resolve names, then configure the DNS server to either forward
queries to your ISP's server or use root hints to resolve names outside your
domain.

I think it's time to go "elsewhere" for the answer.
