W2K Server/Cable Modem

I just installed a Windows 2000 server. I have an XP Pro
machine, a cable modem and a Linksys router.

The server IP address is 192.168.2.100 static address.
The Linksys router is assigning the IP addresses.

I used the wizard to setup the Windows 2000 Server and
added a local domain called BNCDOM.

When I try to copy files from the XP machine to the
server, it takes a while. To copy 40 megs of data, it
takes 4 minutes if I copy from the XP machine, open
\\server\d and paste. Also, if I shut the window on the
server and just let the copy finish, it speeds up.

If I copy from the XP machine, open \192.168.2.100\d and
paste, it takes 15 seconds.

I also seem to get hesitation sometimes opening files
from \\server\d

I setup a lmhost on the XP and server

192.168.2.100 BNCDOM.LOCAL #DOM:BNCDOM.LOCAL
192.168.2.100 SERVER #DOM:BNCDOM.LOCAL

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you using LMHOSTs rather than DNS to resolve the names? Set up
forwarders in your AD-integrated DNS server to point to several public DNS
servers (you may need to remove the * -- root zone -- first). Then make
sure that all servers & workstations specify *only* the internal DNS
server's IP address in their TCP/IP settings.

I'd do DHCP from the server, not the Linksys.

Don't leave any of the NICs on "autosense" - set them to a specific
speed/duplex setting, too.
