2000 Server with Cable Modem

B

Brian Branco

just installed a Windows 2000 server. I have an XP Pro
machine, a cable modem and a Linksys router.

The server IP address is 192.168.2.100 static address.
The Linksys router is assigning the IP addresses.

I used the wizard to setup the Windows 2000 Server and
added a local domain called BNCDOM.

When I try to copy files from the XP machine to the
server, it takes a while. To copy 40 megs of data, it
takes 4 minutes if I copy from the XP machine, open
\\server\d and paste. Also, if I shut the window on the
server and just let the copy finish, it speeds up.

If I copy from the XP machine, open \192.168.2.100\d and
paste, it takes 15 seconds.

I also seem to get hesitation sometimes opening files
from \\server\d

I setup a lmhost on the XP and server

192.168.2.100 BNCDOM.LOCAL #DOM:BNCDOM.LOCAL
192.168.2.100 SERVER #DOM:BNCDOM.LOCAL

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brian:

I don't know what model Linksys you are using but, traditionally the Router is set to:
192.168.1.0 @ mask 255.255.255.0

Your best bet is to have the Linksys be a DHCP server starting with an address such as
192.168.1.20 for whatever number of DHCP clients you want.

Then statically set the IP address of the Win2K Server to something between 192.168.1.2 ~
19.168.1.19 . This is your STATIC IP range. I suggest the Win2K server be: 192.168.1.2.

You should not have to use a LMhosts file since all nodes are on the same subnet.

Whatever the DHCP clients get for DNS you should set in Win2K Server.

I also suggest blocking TCP/UDP ports 135 ~ 139 and 445 on the Linksys.
