W2K network with XP box acting as a router

John Thow

Hi folks.

Not tried this configuration before and it's proving troublesome...

The setup looks like this:-

W2K Pro system
ADSL Modem + ICS
NIC
|
Hub
______|_______
| | |
XP Pro System
NIC 1
NIC 2
|
W98 System
NIC

For ICS purposes, the W2K system has a static IP address (192.168.0.1 /
255.255.255.0). Both NICs on the XP system are set for dynamic IP allocation,
as is the one on the W98 system

Routing has been enabled on the XP system
(HLM \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip \Parameters IPEnableRouter=1 )

All of the systems attached to the hub can see one another, share files and
the internet. The XP system can see all systems in the workgroup - including
the W98 box. The W98 system can see only itself. It also seems to allocate
itself an IP address of 169.254.66.179, rather than obtaining one from the XP
system.

Any idea how to make this work - other than running more cables to the hub??

TIA

The W98 machine cannot get an IP from the XP machine, it has to get it from
ICS. Easiest solution is to plug the W98 machine into the hub
