W2K desktop icons have stopped working

Hello everyone,
I have a Windows 2000 PC with desktop icons that do not
work. The problem exists for each profile on the pc,
including the local administrator.
All the applications launch fine from the start menu and
the quick launch bar, just not the desktop. If I create
a new desktop shortcut, all the shortcuts will start
working, but only until the pc is rebooted.
Any help or advise would be much appreciated. Thanks,

It sounds like the Desktop namespace is corrupted. The only fix I know of is a re-installation but of course I have never seen this issue and may have some other solution entirely. But my money (dinars) is on the desktop namespace being corrupted.
