Vuescan: black picture !?

R

RizAmer

I have just downloaded Vuescan, looking for replacing the CanoScan application I
am not satisfied of.
I have scanned a Kodakchrome slide (archive option).
A 19MB .tif file is created but I can't view it via ACDsee: it just displays a
black picture. CanoScan created file for the same slide (29MB) displays ok.
Should I "purchase Vuescan" to overcome ?
During the scan, a windows pops saying ".. embedded Dollar-watermark .."
What does that mean ?
I found nothing on the site (http://www.hamrick.com)
Thanks

In the evaluation version of VueScan, when everything is working, the final
scan file that is saved to the hard drive has a $ watermark embedded in the
image.

Otherwise the file looks normal.

If you have a black image, something when wrong. Obviously, because the
..tiff file sizes are vastly different.

Try using the default settings without changing anything. Be sure you are
scanning a positive image and do not have a negative setting.

I do not use VueScan. I use the TWAIN driver for the brand of scanner I am
using.
If you are not happy with CanoScan, you will most likely not like VueScan at
all.

Are you sure it's not a raw scan, a high-bit scan that your editor
can't open or the IR channel? Take a look at the output tab and make
sure it's set to .jpg or .tiff and check the bit depth too.
Are the previews black too? You sure you set it to scan the right
frame?

Vuescan is notoriously buggy (check the archives). Different version
have different problems. For example, I remember reading that a recent
version kept creating 0-byte files. Maybe that's it?

Purchasing it will not fix the bugs. Do note also you will *not* be
able to get your money back if in the end you find out it's unusable.

Some people are happy with Vuescan but they have relatively low
requirements. Also, if you do take the plunge, don't upgrade just to
keep up. Let other people debug new versions first. Finally, save old
copies which still work before upgrading!!

There are several people here who do use it and they will be able to
help you along. And you *will* need *a lot* of help! ;o)

It's the "protection" to make you purchase it. After you enter a
registration number the "$" watermarks disappear.

Unlike professional software Vuescan uses a very crude way of
superimposing this watermark. It's easily removed to better evaluate.

On reflection, I seem to remember that Vuescan defaults to creating
compressed TIF images. Maybe ACDsee can't handle compressed TIFFs?

Try disabling the compression - if you can find it in the Vuescan's
confusing "user interface". Otherwise, maybe a Vuescan user can tell
you how. Anyone?

All parameters are defalut ones except color (Kodakrome)
But; as I said in another post, it turn out that the bug is due to ACDsee (3.1)
Thanks for your help!

It's due to ACDsee. I tried PhotoShop and IrfanView and it was ok.
I don't know why ACDsee shows a black picture without notice.

The couple of slides I scanned with Vuescan are far better looking than with
Canoscan. Canoscan gives dominant blue pictures of 29 MB .tif each (at 2710dpi)
but Vuescan gives warmer pictures, 19MB only.. As a newbye, I can't explain. I
just want to save my slides shot in the 80ies, to CD.
Thanks again for your help!

I don't know why ACDsee shows a black picture without notice.

I as already mentioned, most likely because it can't handle compressed
TIFFs.

Ask a Vuescan user how to turn compression off, and then try ACDsee
again.
