VueScan: Bug in AutoScan behavior?

P

(PeteCresswell)

Maybe I don't understand it properly, but from reading the Help file it sounds
like if I set AutoScan=Scan, VueScan will initiate a scan every time a slide is
inserted.

Instead, it just keeps initiating scan-after-scan if a slide is left in the
scanner. i.e. one would expect it to scan once, then wait for the current slide
to be removed and another inserted...

You posted an almost identical message to this on July 31st, and in it you
said that this only occurs if you have 'Scan from Preview' enabled. Is this
still the case? If so, why not simply disable it?

As I understand it, VueScan uses the preview to determine the optimum
exposure which it then applies to the scan. If you scan from preview, you
will not get this optimised exposure (unless you repeat the preview with the
exposure locked). Therefore, whilst scanning from preview might save you
some time, it won't get the optimum results.

I misstated my real agenda.

As long as I had to sit by the 'puter all the time while scanning, saving time
was attractive.

But what I really wanted was to be able to just leave the scanner/ViewScan up
and running 24/7 and just feed it a slide whenever I happened to walk past the
PC.

Seems to me that sometime last year or the year before I had managed to set it
all up so that was possible. OTOH, there have been a number of revs to the
ViewScan app during that time.

No, I did understand what you were doing - I also like Vuescan for this very
reason. (Nikonscan needs a mouse click to initiate the scan and a
confirmation of the file name). I thought if the problem was being caused by
the Scan from Preview, that disabling it would not only solve the problem,
but would be better policy in general. Alas, it seems life is not so simple
:-(

I also have an LS4000 (Super Coolscan 4000 in these parts). I haven't
ventured beyond VueScan V8.2.20 - this version works fine with the Auto
Scan - Scan function (I've just tried it now to confirm). If I were you, I
would invoke an older version of Vuescan if you can and try again. If it
works OK (on the basis of my experience, V8.2.20 and before should be OK),
save off your settings template and import them into V8.2.32. - if it fails,
then it would suggest a bug in this version. Then it's time to drop Mr
Hamrick a line ......

P.S. If you haven't saved your older versions, you should be able to get
them from http://web.archive.org/

Well, my curiosity got the better of me - I've just downloaded and installed
VueScan V8.2.35. Auto scan works like a charm. Settings as follows (Input
tab):

Auto Focus - Preview
Auto Scan - Scan
Auto Save - Scan
Auto Print - none
Number of Samples - 1
Scan from Preview - None

Scan starts automatically on inserting slide, does a preview followed by
scan, saves files then stops. No endless loop of scans.

The plot thickens!

Good catch!!!!

I had Scan From Preview=Always and the preview rez jacked up to 4000 in an
effort to speed up the workflow (i.e. not scan twice...)

However this is a new version of the app.

I cannot recall the outcome of the July 31st scenario, but I just tried it with
Scan From Preview=None and the problem persists.

I guess it's time to just set the preview rez down to some minimal value.

You bet!

Likewise, I dl'd 8.2.35.
But the problem persists for me.

When it came time for program testing,

I've tried again with same settings as above (only difference I can see from
mine was Auto Save - none) and I can't make it happen. Assuming you've
started from a clean install, maybe we're looking at a hardware problem?
Does anything weird happen when using NikonScan?

Check if the number of crops in X and Y directions
in the crop tab is not equal to 1.

That's 'number of crops', right?

Yup. K, that's not the problem, then.
