After installing sp2 for XP Pro I am unable to connect
using my sonicwall VPN client. I have tried multiple
configuration changes to the XP firewall but nothing
works. Simply disablng the XP firewall allows me to
connect through the sonicwall VPN client. I contacted
sonicwall support and they claim there is no way for it
to work through the XP firewall of sp2 (it worked through
the XP firewall of sp1). Can this be correct??

Odd, because the XP firewall doesn't block outbound traffic - and you're
initiating the connection. However, you may be able to open up holes in the
FW if needed...I personally use their client behind (hardware/perimeter)
firewalls with nothing inbound allowed, so it can't be as simple as that.

I also use a hardware firewall, but I have remote users
currently only using the XP firewall that I know are
going to have this issue I am experiencing with the XP
SP2 firewall. Will figure out what ports the VPN client
uses and try opening them. thx

Hmmm - well, VPN doesn't generally require that ports be open inbound in a
firewall - as long as the connection is initiated from *inside*. Have you
tried uninstalling / reinstalling the Sonicwall client? Checked with
Sonicwall support to see if there are known issues? Which version of the
client - 8.x or the Global VPN client?

I am having the exactly same problem using SP2 PPTP VPN
client at my notebook. When I connect to my office,
mapping a drive to a resource in the LAN there does not
works unless I turn FW protection for this VPN connection
off in the notebook. Every other port (FTP, POP3, etc.)
works fine. It's odd as FW should not care about outbound
traffic for VPNs. It was working fine with SP1, but I had
no firewall installed. Did you figured out the reason for
this weird behavior?
