VPN using wrong DNS

J

Jesse

I've seen several people posting this question, but no answer: when I
connect to my office VPN, everything works fine *except* DNS lookups. I can
access shares on the office server by IP address, but not by name. I can
access external websites by IP address, but not by name.

So, two questions:

1. How do I get the DNS settings straightened out?

2. Is there a way to say "If I'm accessing something on the office's private
network, use the VPN tunnel; if I'm accessing something else, do not use the
tunnel"?

Thanks!

Assuming this is windows VPN, by design, it uses the remote network gateway or router. It should also use the remote network DNS/WINS. If this is the case, you access the Internet and remote site, you will use DNS/WINS for name resolution. If you access local network computers, it may use NetBIOS over TCP/IP. The "If' condition you asked is routing issue and it is possible.
