Do you have to open up ports via the router on the VPN server side?

If you open ports, then how do you tell Remote Desktop to connect to that
particular port(s)?

When you open the ports on your router you have to tell it what system to
forward the request to.

In Remote Desktop, then how do you specify the ports when defining your
hosts?

When you input the port numbers you also input the IP of the pc you are
trying to access.
