vpn problem

i have a winxp pro box acting as my vpn server. I am trying to access is
(pptp) using a win98se box. I can access it via vpn(using a local computer)
by using the computer name with no problems however when i try toaccess via
IP(iether local or from WAN) it errors after saying verifying user name and
password says something like computer did not respond. The reason this is a
problem is because i need to be able to connect remotely and i do not have a
namte that i can use to connect, only an IP

Good Grief!

That is not a valid connection since you are on the same LAN as the
VPN Server. That method can be used to verify that the VPN is
installed, but not much more.

You need the VPN Client outside the VPN Server's LAN to do the tests
properly. If you have a dialup account you can use that from the same
location. Otherwise you will need to put the VPN Client in a remote
location.

ports 1700-1740 to the PC which i am hosting VPN and pptp pass through is
