VPN problem

Hello,
I am not able to connect two computers using VPN PPTP. Both PCs (one
notebook) use WinXP SP2. I have made stationary PC VPN server, notebook -
client.
I have dowloaded Windows XP SP2 Support Tools and I have used two utilities
pptpclnt.exe for the client part and pptpsrv.exe as the server part to test
that both PCs see each other and they do. That means the firewall (router)
lets traffic through on port 1723 and GRE 47 protocol is also working.
The error i recieve when connecting is number 678 - failed to repond. Google
researches hint that is not a rooter or firewall problem but something in
windows.
Inner network works OK, computers see each other. I have disabled Norton
Antivirus too. Router is wireless D-Link 642+ which is configured to let the
PPTP and GRE traffic through.

Are there any ideas what else could be wrong?

Thanks

Aivars

VPN error 678 is connection issue. If pptp tester confirms the all ports are open, make sure you use the correct IP or name. Or use telnet IP 1723 to test it.

Thanks, Robert...

Strange, I cannot telnet the computer as you say... What is the problem then? Telnet just hangs up and i cannot stop it without closing command line window.

I finally managed to connect from laptop to PC using inner local addresses
when both computers are on inside LAN. It was Norton AV worm protection
which did not allow the connection.

But when i use from laptop still on LAN the outer IP address of the router
as if calling from WAN, the connection fails on authentication - i think
something to do with security protocols.

From outside the LAN - from WAN i cannot connect. I think thats because i am
not able to configure the router properly
