VPN port numbers

Chuck

This question has probably been asked before but I've not seen the
specific answer I'm looking for.

I want to set up a VPN tunnel with my XP Home machine acting as the
server. As I understand it, the ports I need to forward on the router are:

pptp - 1723
gre - 43
l2tp - 1701

Is this correct? Which protocols on these ports need to be forwarded?
TCP, UDP, or both?

Thanks.

PPTP and L2TP are TCP port. 43 is IP protocol. In most cases, you don't need to open the GRE. You may just need to enable it. Good luck!

You can "notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\services" for a list of commons services.

I think L2TP is udp, not tcp.
gre is a protocol like tcp and udp are protocols and it has number 47, not 43.

At what level do you need to forward port 47? The choices offered by
both firewalls (Norton FW and the one on on the router) are either tcp
or udp? GRE doesn't show up in my services file to offer any clues. The
question I guess is which of those two protcols does it sit on top of?

Peter,

Thank you for the correction. I should double check them before the post.

GRE is not on top of tcp or udp, it's at the same level.
You may be able to add a protocol in one of the firewalls by specifying its
protocol number (which is 47).
On the other hand, you may not even need to specify this as your firewalls
may accept GRE traffic already.
