VPN - Not as easy as I expected...

I'm trying to set up a VPN between my computer (in Florida) and my
parents' computer (in NJ), both of which are running Windows XP Home behind
a
Linksys broadband router connected to the internet via cable modem.

I've followed all of the step-by-step procedures I've found online to create
an "Incoming Connection" on my parents computer, forwarded port 1723 to the
local computer IP, opened PPTP pass-through in the router and in the
secondary firewall (Norton Antivirus' Internet Worm Protection). Then, I
set up an outgoing VPN connection on my computer and opened the necessary
pass-throughs on my end as above.

Still, even though everything appears to be set up as recommended, I cannot
connect.
I get "Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection."

I verified the IP address I'm using is correct, and cannot think of anything
else to try.

Any ideas?

PPTP VPN through some consumer grade routers can be problematic, at least in
my experience. It may come down to a firmware revision on the router. Make
sure your running the latest firmware. Otherwise you can run this test to
troubleshoot. See the "PPTP Ping" and "VPN Traffic" sections on this page...

From Bob Lin's (MS-MVP) VPN error page...

What do you need a VPN for? If its simply to transfer files easily then
OpenVPN, my personal choice, or Secure Shell (SSH), my brother uses SSH, may
work for you. If you need to remotely control their PC or your PC from a
remote site then UltraVNC is a good option. UltraVNC also has a file
transfer function.

You did not provide enough information.....
Like, do you have public ip address at both the ends or not......
If you have internet connection it will not work out, you login into Linksys
router and confirm that you have a public ip or not......
If you have a public ip at both ends its very simple to configure.....
