VPN:network connection wizard not connecting to internet

I am trying to set up a VPN connection from home (win2000[upgrade from 98SE]) to work. I am using the same instructions that have worked on other PC’s setting up this connection. When using the “network connection wizardâ€, I follow the steps through to the finish. After clicking finish, it does not find my internet connection. Instead, it creates an icon with a red “x†on it that says “type: dial up†and “status: unavailable-device missingâ€. I am on a cable modem, which works fine, and have no dial up accounts. My connections are setup to never dial a connection. I disabled my firewall. My remote access services are started. There are no settings in the properties of the “unavailable†connection that provide for changing the type of connection. I cannot figure out why it assumes that the connection is a dial up??
