VPN keeps breaking

Dave Harry

I have two 512k/128k ADSL connections, and I'm trying to VPN between them.

The VPN server is Windows 2003 STD on a Pentium 3-500MHz, the client is Win
XP Pro on a Pentium-M 1.4GHz.

I can make a connection, but it keeps breaking.
The ADSL lines are reliable and I can perform other tasks with no packet
loss.

All hardware should be fast enough.

Any clues why?

Do you get a full connection? If so, how long is it before you
disconnect (is it 1 or 3 minutes, or some other time)?

Hi Jeffrey

Thanks for your response. Sorry, I meant to put that in.
I seem to get only a few (5?) seconds. Sometimes it lasts nearly a minute. I
had my boss try last night from his ISDN line and he said he got 3 minutes
exactly, each time he tried.

I can't find any place on the server that specifies an idle timeout. Is
there one?
His XP VPN client was apparently set to idle-timeout = "never", as is mine.

BTW: You can get this hotfix from Microsoft for free if you call them
and reference that you need the hotfix for this KB article.

Thanks Jeffrey.
My computer has actually gone for repair (only the audio) at the moment,
I'll try it when it comes back.

The problem I'm having now is consistent disconnection at 3 minutes.

It _seems_ that the last minute or so is not giving much service either. But
it breaks _exactly_ on 3:00 minutes every time.
A known issue?

Problem could be with the policies that are applied on the server.

Check session time out at server side remote access polcies,

properiets of each policy
press Edit Profile
Go to Advance Tab
Check MS-Quarantine session time out

Thanks Ashok, maybe I'm getting closer...
I've created no other policies; I've effectively just 'turned VPN on'.
The two default policies in there have no MS-Quarantine time out.
Now with the individual users being granted access in their user profiles,
do these policies actually apply?

I keep having the same problem. I can connect through the VPN for 3 minutes every time before it disconnects me. Other users can connect to the VPN for extended periods of time without any problems. I have also check other workstations to ensure that my settings are the same for my computer as theirs, but even still 3 minutes is tops and then I get cut off. Any suggestions?
