vpn/email conflict

I just installed a new XP pro, SP2 computer for a client replacing her old
W98SE box. This person has been using a VPN connection to an offsite server.
The problem is now she can either access the offsite server via the VPN
connection, or access email (via outlook), but not both at the same time. Has
anyone got an idea how I fix this?
We're using a Netgear router to a cable modem, and she has Norton Internet
Security loaded on the machine, but to troubleshoot the problem I've turned
it off, as well as the Windows firewall. This does not seem to matter.
Email and the VPN connection worked fine simultaneously with the Win 98 box.
TIA.

The new VPN client probably sets use the remote gateway as default and the
email client then has no route to the Internet. Change use remote gateway
to off.
