VPN drops when logging on to laptop with vista

I hope I am posting to correct discussion group.
I have a wireless router (linksys) with the following setup:
1) Desktop running xp pro connects to router via ethernet cable
2) Laptop connects to router wireless on secure connection

Here is my issue:
The desktop has a vpn connection. Every time I turn on the laptop and the
vpn is connected, the vpn connection drops. The internet connection on both
computers is fine, it is just the vpn that drops.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Can you reconnect to your VPN on the desktop -after- the laptop is powered
on? If so, just reconnect after powering on the laptop... hard to ID root
cause on these types of problems... might be a number of things that are the
root cause to this problem. Is the VPN work related? If so, call your
employer's help desk for support...

Thx for the input. Yes, I can reconnect the VPN after it drops. Just so
inconvenient though. And if I am in the middle of something in VPN, I have to
wait to be done before I can power the laptop. The interesting thing of all
this is that this is the second laptop I have with vista home premium OS and
this is the only one that does this. I had no issues with previous one, which
I no longer own. I do want to find a solution for this issue.

Well, just because you had one laptop that didn't cause this problem,
assuming that first laptop was a different make or model with different
software pre-installed (sometimes called "crapware"), then it's like
comparing apples to oranges.

It's hard to imagine that the simple act of turning a laptop on would cause
the desktop's VPN connection to drop... and I certainly do believe you.

You might run across more experienced folks, regarding this problem, in the
Vista.networking_sharing NG.
