Vista & VPN

I have a Vista Business laptop which I connect to the internet via wireless,
and need to VPN to my company.
I have created a VPN connection and it works until I'm connected to my
company server. I then lose all internet access, and the Network and Sharing
Center shows both connections as Local Only. If I disconnect the VPN,
internet access is restored.
It seems Vista cannot cope with two connections to different networks!

Any one out there with any ideas/guidance?

When you connect via VPN the network card gets a new IP. You effectively
become part of the VPN network.

Any previous connection (using the same NIC) will not work.

You can connect to two networks simultaneously IF you have two network
cards (i,e one NIC and wireless or two NICS).

You maybe able to connect to the internet via the VPN connection - if
the VPN network allows this.

be that his VPN connection *is* trying to use the remote gateway for web.

He should try going into the VPN connection properties, select the TCP/IP v4
Properties, Advanced, and deselect the defualt gateway on remote network
option, if enabled.

Just re-read what you said. But this is not a problem with a SSL based VPN
like OpenVPN, so I would be surprised that it was with a PPTP VPN. If this
is normal, I'd like to know, as I am(was?) about to buy a Netgear Prosafe
firewall/VPN.

Thanks for this, I'll try connecting via wired lan.

Funny that my old XPpro laptop didn't have the same problem, I've used the
same wireless/vpn scenario on that for over two years.

Sorted the problem by NOT using the default remote gateway and by giving the
vpn a fixed DNS server IP.
