VPN connection shows "Unavailable - device missing"

Hi all,

I just installed a wireless network card (Linksys WPC54G)
to my IBM Thinkpad A20p. There were issues and I had to
uninstall and reinstall it using a newer installer from the
Linksys web site. During this process, I eliminated all
the WAN Miniports from my system (both IP and PP2P were
miniports were removed). Next, I had to uninstall all
network protocals followed by all network cards and
reinstalled them all. The Ethernet adapter, wireless
adapter, and WAN Miniport (IP) were re-installed properly,
there is no WAN Miniport (PP2P) device.

Now every time I attempt to add a new VPN connection, it
shows "Unavailable - device missing". Any suggestions on
how to fix this?

The wireless ethernet connection is working fine, I just
can't create a VPN. I have Windows 2000 service pack 4
installed along with the other recent patches from Microsoft.

I have also noted the following errors in the event viewer:

1) The server could not bind to the transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{A9D1E98D-4722-4B7F-939B-48008371D933}.

2) The server could not bind to the transport
\Device\NetbiosSmb because another computer on the network
has the same name. The server could not start.

3) The wpsdrvnt service failed to start due to the
following error:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is
incorrect.

Thanks in advance, Michael

Hi Michael,

Can you tell how you eliminated WAN miniports (IP and PPTP) and reinstalled
them?

thanks
Joe.
