VPN not working (unavailable - device missing)

P

Patrice

OS: Win2K

I'm trying to configure a VPN connection on Win2K on my
second laptop (I can make it work on my first laptop, no
problem) but all attempts failed.

What I get at the end of the process is the VPN shortcut
in the "Network and dial-up Connections" folder preceeded
by an icon displaying a big red X.
The status field displays "unavailable - device missing".
The device name field displays nothing.

I would have expected to see something like:
status field: Disconnected
device name: WAN Miniport (PPTP)

I looked in the knowledge database and tried various
things.
Finally, I uninstalled the network support and reinstalled
it.
That didn't work either.

It seems to me as if the new connection wizard can't
associate the WAN Miniport to the VPN connection (registry
error?).

Anyone has a guess?

Patrice,

I had the same problem on W2k Professional. First, make sure that the
following files are on your machine. You may have to select "show
hidden files and folders" under the "tools" menu, "folder options" menu
and "view" tab in the file explorer.

Look for:
c:\WINNT\inf\netrasa.inf
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\raspptp.sys
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\rasl2pp.sys (that's letter L, not a one)
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\ndiswan.sys

If they are missing, you must extract them from your Windows 2000
Professional CD.

Then go to
http://tinyurl.com/3bsg6

Here you can download a command window program install called
defcon.exe.

When you run it, it will expand to put files into c:\WINNT\temp.

Bring up a command window and cd to c:\WINNT\temp.

Then type this command:

devcon install c:\WINNT\inf\netrasa.inf
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\raspptp.sys

After this, type

devcon install c:\WINNT\inf\netrasa.inf
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\rasl2pp.sys

and then type,

devcon install c:\WINNT\inf\netrasa.inf
c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\ndiswan.sys

Now, if you look in "start", "settings", "control panel", double click
"system", choose "hardware" tab, click "device manager" button, and
click the "view" menu, and click "show hidden devices", and then expand
the "network adapters" tree, you should see your network adapter, and
also three virtual adapters called WAN miniport (PPTP), WAN miniport
(L2PP), and WAN miniport (IP).

Make sure you delete your VPN connection and then reboot. After that,
you can reinstall your VPN connection.

This did the trick for me. It took me a week and a half of head
banging and internet surfing, so I hope it works for you. Good Luck.

Lou.
