Here is my situation: I have a client with a Windows 2000 server SP4
and 3 workstations and 1 laptop all running Windows 2000 Pro SP4. The
network is a cable broadband with a SOHO router. Internal IPs are
192.168.2.x and the server has RAS configured for VPN with a static
internal IP. The server has 1 NIC and it has TCP/IP and File/Print
Sharing bound to the NIC. When I am at the office everything is fine.

However, when the client goes home they want to access a share on the
server from home. They are using the same internet broadband provider
at home and the internal IPs of 192.168.123.x with a different SOHO
router. When I setup the VPN client on the laptop they are able to
connect, validate, and login to the network fine. Then the trouble
starts. I cannot ping the server using 192.168.2.254 (the static IP of
the server at the office). I cannot connect by typing
\\servername\share in windows or net use in a command prompt. I
suspected a WINS or LMHOST issue so I entered 192.168.2.254 and the
servername into LMHOST and HOSTS. Still nothing.

Right now I am at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated. I have tried to be thorough, but if I have left out any
neccessary information please let me know.

Thanks,
John

Assuming your subnet masks are 255.255.255.0, the problem is your internal
IP addresses are not compatible. Because one is 192.168.2.x and the other
is 192.168.123.x, they are on different networks.

Okay... how about this one tho... I have mulitple sites using windows 2000 pro SP2 connecting over VPN (using cable modems) to our win 2000 server. All connect fine... the VPN address is publicly available.( I can even log in from home over a dial up connection.

(windows 2000 pro SP2
When I go to Start > run > \\server1 or \\server2 it opens a "my computer" window to the shares on either server in our net work(internally addressed 192.168.1.3 or 192.168.0.4)

(windows 2000 pro SP3, SP4, or IE6.x
If I install SP3, SP4, or update IE5.0 to IE6.x and then connect to the vpn when I go start > run > \\server1 or \\server2 it says "\\server1 cannot be found" or "\\server2 cannot be found"

(reinstall windows 2000 pro sp2
If I reformat the hard drive and put a clean install of windows 2000 pro w/ sp2 the machine works fine... somthing that is updated in all of these 3 is causing the problem... any ideas what?... and how I can avoid it... but still update?

Any reason why you still have SP2 on the W2K's? They are very very vunerable
for the blast worm.
Install SP4 and the ms03-039 as soon as you can. This might also solve your
problem.

I have SP4 and blaster worm repair on all non VPNing Machines. When any of the machines VPNing in have any thing higher then sp2 installled tho the problem occurs.

Which problem?
