VPN-Can't get it to work

I'm having a very tough time getting VPN to work between a Win2K PRO host
and a WinXP client.

I have several books on Win2K and they all make it sound so easy to get a
VPN connection going, but they don't explain what to do about the router.

On the Win2K machine I created a new "Accept Incoming Calls" connection. I
selected "Allow Virtual Private Connections" and then selected some existing
users. Then I accepted all the listed protocols and set TCP/IP to "Allow
Callers to Access".

On the XP machine, I created a new VPN connection and tried assigning the
WAN address as the destination. No luck connecting.

All the instructions in my books and on the web outline identical, simple
steps to set up the VPN connection, but they don't seem to account for
routing issues.

I'm wondering - How do I bypass the router in order to get to the Win2K
machine via VPN? Do I have to do some kind of port forwarding? My router
(Netgear MR814v2) says on the box "has VPN Pass-through", but I see no
provision for configuring it in the setup screens.

Could someone please rescue me from my ignorance? I will be truly grateful.

Windows 2000 Pro peer-to-peer network, group name is "WORKGROUP". Off-site
remote PC is XP Pro.

Thanks, Brian

First off you have to be using pptp. In the vpn connectoid of your XP machine select
properties/networking/type of VPN and make sure pptp is selected and not auto. Then
on your router you need to make sure that pptp passthrough is enabled [it may be by
default and not configurable] and port forwarding for port 1723 TCP must be
configured to the internal ip address of your W2K pro computer [as displayed via
ipconfig /all ] -- Steve
