VPN access

Jeff

I have tried to find out which ports need to be opened on
my router to allow VPN access to my XP Pro box, but i
have not been able to resolve. I am currently forwarding
port 1723 (tcp) and 500 (udp) to my static IP assigned
box in ternally. Any ideas ?

You also need to make sure the router will pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic for PPTP VPN. Some routers
call this "PPTP Pass Through" or "VPN Pass Through". Consult the router manufacturers support web
site or manuals for help with that.

And if you are only using PPTP you do NOT need UDP 500 opened as this port
is for L2TP/IPSec.

Which ports need to be opened for running VPN

A: PPTP VPN uses TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE); L2TP: UDP Port 1701;
IPSec: Pass IP protocol 50 and 51. Note: 47 is a protocol number and not
TCP port. The protocol name is GRE. It'll make a big difference when
configuring your firewall or router.
