Normally it's the little speaker icon in the icon tray. You can also access
it from "Sounds and audio devices" in the Control Panel.

Start
Run
Type/copy&paste: "control mmsys.cpl sounds" (without the quotes)
Enter
Tick the box to put the volume in the task bar.
