how to get rid of the short noise that makes the volume control w/mouse ?

The general volume control can be adjusted either (1) by opening the
volume control and changing the volume lever with the up/down keys or
with the mouse cursor, as well as (2) via dedicated volume control
keys, on keyboards provided with this facility.

However, the (1) makes an annoying noise whenever I change the
vertical position of the volume lever. This is something WinXP
specific, as with Win2000 there is no associated noise with the volume
control.

How can I get rid of this ? It gets me nuts.

Thank you,
Cristi

I would think that the mouse movement causes some radio wave emission that
is picked up by either the sound card or the wires to the speaker connector
acting as an antenna.

I can't imagine a dependence on the Windows version. So if there is, I would
love to know how.

A solution may be to have any sound leave the computer digitally, and have
it turned to analog in a USB audio interface.
(These are on offer from at least Edirol and M-Audio. But this being a music
group, you might as well be interested in the products by Alesis.)

Another approach may be using a graphic tablet instead of a mouse. I love
using a real Wacom, and regret buying a less expensive make.

These are expensive remedies for a slight problem (but I think that you
mention a dentist's driil sound), so I hope that somebody else has a
solution like shielding cables.

???
What antenna ?? I am working here with a builtin touchpad. I am working
there with a wired mouse. This can be heard on _any_ WinXP. It is the
Windows XP Ding.wav which is triggered by the general volume control
adjustment.
I want to know how can I break this association (i.e. volume adjustment
event <-> Windows XP Ding.wav playout).
This noise association does not exists in previous Windows versions.
