Volume License Question to MICROSOFT

G

GE

Hello -

My company is using XP professional as the operating system in our medical
instrumentation systems. Currently we are preparing a master image with the
sysprep utility. In our production environment we are constantly updating
the contents of this drive and thus surpassing the 3 reseal limit. As you
can imagine the activation process becomes difficult to work with in this
situation.

Have looked into volume license with our software suppler but it is my
understanding that this type of license would be for our internal compnay
use only and if we resold to our customers as part of the system it would be
a violation of the VLA. Is this accurate? We have also been told that our
volumes are not large enough for special licenses (such as a large PC
manufacturer)

Are there any groups setup at MS that can help me with my situation.? Any
information is helpful.

Thanks in advance,

You cannot resell a Volume License version of Windows XP
to an end user. You need to purchase either retail or OEM
versions.

You are correct on your understanding that VL is for your company internal
use only.
As Carey has already said - you cannot resell your Volume Licenses to third
parties. If you want to sell machines with Windows XP preinstalled then you
would be in the system builder business and using OEM media and licensing

Thanks for the input. We currently use the retail version. Will the OEM
version allow for duplication without the need for activation? Thanks.

No. All versions of Windows XP, except Volume License versions,
require Product Activation.

I suggest you start with http://www.microsoft.com/oem/main.mspx and
browse through the various web pages and contact links there.

That should provide you with some additional information and hopefully
also put you in contact with the people at Microsoft who have the
answers to your specific questions.

You might also want to contact your closest Microsoft office and seek
their assistance.

For the record we actually are using the OEM version of software (not
retail...my mistake). non the less activation is really the issue. Thanks
all for your input.

Are you buying computers from manufacturers that come with OEM version of
Windows XP? Or you build the computers and buy OEM WinXP to install on them?
