Volume Control

The volume control appears as a series of green vertical bars...many for loud, few for soft,
and an "X" if the sound is mute.

This visual display of the volume setting has gone away for some reason.

Does anyone know how I can get it back?

If you double-click the Speaker in the System Tray do you get a "button"
in the Taskbar? If so try r-click on the Taskbar and then select Cascade
and the display should return to the desktop.
