Hi,

I was looking at the article that I believe you had found:

319095 Volume Icon Is Not Displayed in the Notification Area, and You
Receive
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=319095

It sounds like the error message you are getting is from the expand
utility. Here's a variation of the command (try it instead of what the
article says, after you have run the 'cd i386' command as shown in step 4):

expand sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\sndvol32.exe

That's it. The '%systemroot%' that I indicate is actually a variable that
XP has to indicate the path to the directory where Windows is installed on
the hard drive.

The other thing you can try before following the steps in the article is to
locate the file sndvol32.exe in the Windows\System32 folder and rename it.
This will ensure that the expand utility won't have to try to overwrite it.

Hi Vlad, I just had the same problem following the same instructions. Put a space between the underline after the expand phrase (expand sndvol32.ex_{space}c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe.). Doesn't look like there's one on the help page. Worked for me. ('course, now I have the file in the proper place, but it still doesn't work!). Good luck
