volume control missing from taskbar

Hello. I am having a problem getting my volume control icon to re-appear on
my taskbar. I have gone to the control panel, chosen the Sounds and Audio
devices icon and then selected the box that says: Place volume icon in
taskbar. After I click "apply", it still does not re-appear. I also went to
the Taskbar properties and chose for it to appear even when it was inactive.
Still does not appear. Finally, I noticed in the Taskbar properties menu
that the volume control does not show as a "current" item. Instead it shows
as a "past item". The volume control icon used to show up on the taskbar and
now all of a sudden it does not. Even though I have physical volume control
buttons on my computer, I am only able to control the volume by opening the
volume control window from the control panel. Can someone please help?
Thanks.

Place your XP CD in then go to Start/Run and type in:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

Once done: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 stobject.dll
