Voice modem disabled in XP

When Windows finds my modem it loads drivers for a data only modem. It does not recognize that I have a voice modem. Consequently the telophony software does not work. When I try to manually load the drivers XP will not let me assign the modem to COM 3. What can I do? The modem is a Diamond SupraMax 56K PCI Voice modem that is no longer supported by Diamond Multimedia.
