What is WinVNC/UtraVNC? I have one computer at home with Windows XP, what is
it that the VNC programs do and what are the possible risks because I'm a
little worried about the security of my computer and others possibly
accessing info. from outside sources. plese help, thanks.

Remote Control/Remote Sharing applications.
VNC comes in several different "flavors" all stemming from one original that
came from the AT&T labs some years ago.

UltrVNC and TightVNC are my favorites for various reasons.

If you have Windows XP Professional - you have Remote Desktop and Remote
Assistance built into the OS.
If you have Windows XP Home - you have Remote Assistance built into the OS.

You can make VNC more secure by adding plugins or using VPN, etc.
In general - it is much more secure than a lot of other methods of getting
files moved around and using your machine remotely (and to its fullest
potential.)
