VMWare/Virtual PC Licensing?

B

Ben

Hi,

I'm just wondering what Microsoft's take is on licensing Windows XP while
using VMWare/Virtual PC. Do you need 2 licenses, one to run the base OS, and
another to run in VMWare? I've read the XP EULA
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/eula.mspx) and it says
"The Product may not be used by more than two (2) processors at any one time
on any single Workstation Computer."
My understanding of that is that a copy of XP running on a workstation
running VMWare isn't breaching licensing.

Is this correct?

No. A Windows XP license can only be used once on
one computer. A second installation requires a second
license, period.

From the EULA:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access,
display and run one copy of the Software on a single
computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other
device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not
be used by more than two (2) processors at any one
time on any single Workstation Computer.

I always though you could install two or more instances of XP on a
machine using the miltiboot menu and entries in boot.ini.

Come to think of it I haven't seen the multiboot pause since NT4
days. I see boot.ini still exists.

Short answer: No this is not allowed.

Sure, but unless there is more then one OS (or rather, more then one
bootable partition) then there will be a delay (by default)

I thought this would be allowed, as your not running 2 copies at once. You
could only boot up one instance at any one time.
