Do the visual effects make a difference in energy usage? If so, about how
much? I mean like should we be "going green" and ditching the eye candy or
what?

If you run a laptop on battery power with full visual effects then you can
get less battery power per charge but not a huge amount, so yes it does use
more energy. But as for how much in terms of real usage, I don't know. Its
the sort of thing where for an individual the effect is very tiny and
negligable but if millions were dong the same thing it would have an effect.
You alone ditching the eye candy is not going to save the earth.

If you want to green, turn off the computer for a few hours and take a nice
long walk.

Or better yet, go to the beach...
