I originally set up my system to have automatic updates, which for someone
that is not very techical seemed to be the way to go. Last month an
automatic update goofed up my screen and it took several attempts and hours
to get it fixed. Now I am leary to do any updates. Is there a place to
check if there have been problems with updates. What is the best thing to do
about updates. At this point I just ignore them.

Personal opinion is to set the update to "Notify you that updates are
available, but do not download"
This way you can check what updates are available, and you decide to
download (plus you are fully aware of what is available) then down load &
install those which you decide on.
Do not accept optional MS updates for devices and equipment on PC, get them
from either the PC manufacturer or the device manufacturers website.
Again personally I accept all MS operating system updates (critcal &
recommended) and have had no problems, that includes pre & post SP1.
If by chance a MS update causes a problem, before updating a restore point
is created, use the system restore to restore system to the point prior to
installation of update,
