My Windows Vista automatically updated overnight and this morning my desktop
has changed and all my email folders are empty and ones I created are missing
- some desperately important. If anyone can help can you also tell me how to
back-up emails in case this happens again

That type of problem can be caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
For more information on why email scanning is bad, see
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

You may need to uninstall your antivirus, to see if that cures the problem.
If that doesn't restore your missing emails and contacts, try upgrading
to Windows Live Mail. It will auto-import whatever it can salvage from
your Windows Mail.
