Vista Ultimate features

installed Vista Ultimate retail version on one home desktop and despite reading both
included docs and the web site, am not entirely clear on what/how I would recommend
this version

I read these, so my apologies for not understanding what makes this "ultimate"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/ultimate.mspx
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_editions_final.asp (about halfway down
page)

my installed version is build 6000

one other related question, which defragger works well in Vista Ultimate? Diskeeper,
O&O Defrag, Perfect Disc, Winternals, etc?
or leave it running with it's internal version of DK ?

Both PerfectDisk and Diskeeper have Vista versions.

My personal favorite is Diskeeper 2007. Their Vista version
just went final. However, as of right now, they do not have a
trial available for it. I have been using it and it is far superior to
Vista's defrag. PerfectDisk is a fine product, too.

2007 product line. It is a free update for licensed Diskeeper 2007 customers, as well as

OO is also now shipping the rtm of their Vista defragger (x86 and x64). I
prefer Diskeeper myself.

I've never tried Diskeeper. Can you specify anything in particular that
leads you to prefer it to PerfectDisk? Just curious.

Personal experience, David.

Diskeeper does have some nice features.

I will say, I do believe some defrag too much and
attribute too much in perceived performance gains
to defragging. Many times, were talking milliseconds
in actual improvement.

Microsoft Vista Ultimate edition is the combination of Vista Home Basic,
Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Enterprise. Simply put, you
get features of Home Premium like Windows Media Center and Business features
like the ability to join a domain. In addition to having all the features of
the four vista editions, Vista Ultimate Edition will feature additional
applications and utilities. According to the Vista Ultimate website, as
announced at CES, the first ultimate only features will be Dream Scene, Texas
hold ‘em, and an enhanced Bit locker and EFS. Other Ultimate updates have
been planned, but have not yet announced. IMHO, Vista Ultimate edition will
be most suited to technology enthusiasts.

Diskeeper 2007 for Vista was several times faster than PD for Vista on large
drives in my testing. PD took all night to defrag a heavily fragged 500GB
disk with about 20% free space. I restored the image to the drive and
repeated with DK and it only took about 90 minutes.

It really isn't important which of these fine programs you use. What is
important is to defrag.

Murray,

Have used Vista (several Versions and several machines) for near two years;
when BitLocker and EFS are activated and employed, trial and error
experience dictates, when adding third party software add-ons, does nothing
other than induce conflicts for Vista’s incredibly Secure OS. The previous
experiences has been learned the hard method by many others including myself.

Sometimes we are humans wrongly believe what was necessary historically
might be needed today, not so in respect to using Vista Ultimate with
BitLocker and EFS employed. Again, the above learned the hard method;
however, your machine, your decision…
