vista ultimate application crashes

Is there any known issue with Windows Vista Ultimate (Retail Ed. 32-bit) and
the ability to run applications shipped with windows vista? e.g. Solitaire.

Since day 1 most of the card games shipped with Ultimate have crashed on
startup when I try to launch them. While the little card games aren't really
that important I take it as an indicator that I cannot trust the PC running
Vista Ultimate to any serious tasks. Are there any known issues that might
result in these basic applications not functioning?

I'm running a clean install of the retail version on a standard Intel
Pentium D (65nm version) system with 2GB memory. The system is not
overclocked and the memory passes both memtest86 (run for 24 hours) and the
memory test tool shipped with vista.

It may be of note that the machine was running Windows XP without a problem
before it was wiped and had Vista placed on it. Additionally, Vista has been
re-installed a few times in a failed attempt to see if I had missed some
"critical option" at during installation.

Any help would be appreciated or a kick in the pants to the right place to
ask this question.

Thanks

First of, knowing Microsoft operating system, if one thing crashes
constantly, it doesn't mean you can't trust any other part of it. I know it
sounds weird, but that's the way it is.

Have you tried to look in the Event Viewer to see what caused the crash?
Open the Start orb and type in eventvwr.msc and take a look at Windows Logs,
especially the Application and System parts. See if there's anything related
to programs that crash (with Solitaire it's probably going to be Sol.exe)
and see what is the reason the system gives for the crash. Post it here too.

None, I have Ultimate that was upgraded from Home Premium and it's running
like a champ. I even played a couple of games of Solitaire just now. I
didn't win the games, but the application didn't crash.

Only if they are not Vista compatible.

Did you run the Vista compatibly check first to is if the machine was Vista
ready?

Vista came preinstalled on this laptop, and I have not had but one problem
when I installed and acclimation that was not Vista compatible that forced
me to do a restore.

I am running things like IIS 7.0, SQL Server 2005, VS .NET 2005 etc, etc and
Vista is running like a champ on the 32 bit version.

If your machine is Vista compatible and you do have a retail version of
Vista, then you can call MS for support, if you're still with in the 180
days activation period.

I have called them a couple of times for support.

are there any errors produced or just reboot.
if reboot, turn off the reboot on error so you can get the error information.

No inherent problems that I'm aware of. Look at graphics drivers and a BIOS
update and go from there.
