Just wanted to share an experience with folks here. I have a Vista
Ultimate fresh install on a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 motherboard. Intel
e6420 CPU. 2GB memory, etc. Works perfectly.
I recently added a PCI USB and Firewire adapter card which I got in
Hong Kong. It uses the ALi chipset. Vista recognized it fine, USB and
1394 ports worked fine. Everything seemed fine... so I thought.
Then I shutdown my PC and I walked away. Hours later I noticed that
the PC was sitting idle at the screensaver running Vista. Funny, I
thought I had Shutdown. So I watched this time. Shutdown, Windows
Shutting down, Screen goes dark and power supply turns 'off'... THEN 2
seconds later the whole thing starts up again! Magically! It just
won't stay OFF.
I repeated this several times and find no other cause. I removed the
Ali PCI card and viola' - the PC shuts down again just fine. Ali makes
no mention of the M5571 chipset on their website, so no way to get
newer drivers, etc. It also 'feels' like a hardware issue, but not
sure how this is actually happening.
I have a different PCI based VIA chipset USB and Firewire combo card I
plan to try next week.
Strange.
