Vista troubleshoots its own problem

Today for the first time since this laptop was bought (over a year ago) I
have experienced an OS software problem. To my grateful surprise VISTA
sorted itself out without assistance from me or requiring me to call for
help!

Two days ago I tried to put the laptop to sleep at the end of my work. It
refused to do so because it needed to shut down to install two updates which
it had downloaded in the background. OK, so it closed down, I put it away
and went to bed.

Today on power-up it stopped at a black screen after POST and wouldn't load
VISTA. I re-started the machine and this time I received a DOS-type screen
indicating there was a serious OS fault and did I wish to run a start-up
repair - yes. Several minutes later it came back to say that there were
corrupt files and asked if I wanted it to restore to an earlier time - yes.
Finally it restarted by itself and this time the OS loaded normally and I
was up and running.

I don't suppose this is anything great to you experienced MVP's but I just
want to say how grateful I am that I was able to continue working with a
minimum of fuss. To me that an OS that can sort out problems for itself
intelligently is a mark of an excellent and well-designed piece of
software.

So why do I read so many posts rubbishing VISTA?

Your the lucky one that's why. I've had that one too. But since 260608
I've had more than 20 problems reported to MS in the automatic system. I
cleared the problem report then because it had over 100 problems. My machine
isn't special either it's only used for MS Office and a few other
applications at home. No games.
