Windows Vista takes ages to start-up

A few days ago my Toshiba Satellite A100-033 laptop decided to stop working
properly. When I turn the computer on the user account screen loads ok. But
then once I have entered my password the welcome screen appears for at least
5minutes, and then there is a black screen, which remains there for another
5minutes. All-in-all my laptop takes a good half an hour before the desktop
displays and it sorts itself out to work properly.

I have tried updates, virus scans (which say the computer is clean),
removing unwanted software, freeing up disk space, de-fragin' the hard drive
and system restore, but none have proved successful.

If anyone has any ideas how to help me, I would be extremely grateful.

1. Does the same thing happen in another user account? If you don't have
another user account, create one and try. If the new user account is fine,
copy your data from the original account to the new one and delete the
original one.

2. If the same thing happens in a new user account, does the problem occur
in Safe Mode? If the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, you most probably
have a software issue. Back up your data and restore to factory condition.

3. If the same thing *does* happen in Safe Mode, you most probably have a
hardware issue. Test the hardware, starting with the hard drive.

Surely if the problem doesnt occur in Safe Mode, its a driver issue, or
something that is set to auto start
