Vista to XP Conversion - Toshiba Notebook Model A135-S7403

If this is not the right newgroup, please direct me.... thank you!

I've reformatted and installed XP on this notebook and it has left me
needing drivers for the ethernet controllers (wired and wireless), the mass
storage controller, sound and video controllers....

Toshiba's web site only has downloads for Vista...

Is there a trustworthy place to find these or will the vista drivers work?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Did you get a CD with the notebook when you bought it? The drivers will be
on there.

You've hit one of the problems in switching operating systems on notebooks -
much of the electronic components are integrated and optimized for space and
energy consumption requirements. In desktop motherboards, the manufacturers
can be more general and even leave some operations to commodity or
specialized plug-in boards, like video cards.

In your case, Toshiba is the hardware manufacturer and has primary
responsibility for the hardware drivers. If they don't make one, it is
unlikely that someone else would do so.

That's not to say that an alternate driver does not exist...

Googling for your model number, I found this:

Scroll down to the comment by "DropVista" - he found drivers on an European
site for a similar model laptop. Keep reading down - DropVista has pertinent
comments in reply to someone (GypsyPixie - maybe you?) with exactly the same
model.

Toshiba will be the only reliable place to get drivers for their
notebooks.
It is possible there are no windows XP drivers for those components
other than the Windows XP native drivers.

You may consider returning the laptop and purchasing one with Windows
XP.
Toshiba is one of the major OEMs selling computers with Windows XP:

A combination of the Vista disk, the drivers listed on that forum and a
little trial and error did the trick. I'm up, running, and completely free
of unknown devices. Thank you!

This a common problem, particularly with notebooks. You bought a
computer that was sold with Vista, and came with Vista drivers. There
probably are no XP drivers for it, because Toshiba did not plan on
your changing the operating system, and it didn't want to invest the
time and money to develop XP drivers.

Is there a trustworthy place to find these

There is probably *no* place to find them. trustworthy or not.

or will the vista drivers work?

No, they won't.

You can ask Toshiba for help, but my guess that you're out of luck.
Put Vista back on the system.

Thanks for responding. I did, however, get this computer working as it
should with XP as my OS. I'll use Vista when I'm ready, but I'm not ready
yet. I've got the disk for when I am.

For notebooks, most often, you have to use the recovery disks that came
with the notebook. Sometimes, for Dells for example, XP drivers "may" be
available.
