Installing SP2 on Toshiba Satellite crashes the notebook...

Toshiba Satellite 1135-S1553 with Windows XP

The user says that installing SP2 makes the computer unbootable. I
don't have the computer myself but I understand that the computer can't
even boot into safe mode. So where ever the problem is, it seems to
pretty low-level, maybe shortly after the BIOS is done. I don't believe
the user gets any blue screens.

Toshiba's website doesn't list any information regarding this model and
SP2, no prerequisites, etc.

What's the recommended procedure to successfully install SP2? This
notebook isn't connected to a broadband connection so it complicates
large driver downloads, using the XP Update website, etc.

Should we install the latest BIOS update?

It's impossible to tell which pieces of hardware might have had newer
drivers released since this machine was purchased, unless we try to
research the dates on each driver from the Device Manager. Will that
help us?

Which drivers are most likely to cause the problem?
LAN/Ethernet
Graphics
Wireless Card
Internal Modem

Or does someone have a different suggestion?

One possibilty is damaged or failing memory.

A possibility for installing SP2, particularly if you can't boot the
machine, and *if* the supplied XP install media supports it, is to download
the entire SP2 service pack and create a slipstreamed version of the XP CD.
Then, do a repair install with the updated CD.

If you can't do that but can get a way to boot the machine without SP2, use
the full install you downloaded for the slipstream. Install from CD or
copy the SP2 file to hard disk.

Get the full SP2 download here:

One of the sites on Slipstreaming:

Pay close attention to what's required to make the CD bootable. Not all CD
burner programs have the options required (particularly emulation type and
sectors loaded) to make CDs bootable.
