Vista Side Bar requests Server Permission

K

I have only the sticky notes and the weather gadget running on my sidebar.
Why does the side bar need to act as a server? I understand the side bar
needing internet access to update the weather, but not why it would need to
act as a server. I deny the request, which the side bar first asks for in the
internet zone and when that is denied it requests to act as server in the
trusted zone. I deny that also. The weather gadget still updates without the
permission to act as server. The weather forecast is by Foreca but there is
no other info or about that I can find on the gadget.

The Vista weather gadget does not do this so I would suspect it's the
particular weather gadget you are using that is causing these alerts. Use a
different one if you don't like the way this one behaves.

As far as I know, I am using the Vista weather gadget. Both the weather and
the notes are authored by Microsoft. If found the Notes is version 1.0.0.0
and the Weather is version 1.1.0.0.

Sorry, don't have any further advice for you. I don't see similar activity
on my system nor on my wife's and we both use the MS weather gadget. A scan
for spyware/adware/etc may be in order.

Thank you for trying to answer my question. I have run spyware/adware/etc and
run those daily, besides a virus scanner. I run Live One Care frequently
also. I think I am paranoid about it. As far as I can determine, I do not
have any infections on my system - Vista Home Premium. I use ZoneAlarm IIS
which has a firewall besides the spyware/virus checker and have a couple
other programs for spyware/adware checking. There is also a firewall on my
wireless router.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
