Vista SFC Failure

When will Microsoft fix sfc /scannow ?

SFC (system file checker) returns a corrupt files found but cant fix message
on new PCs. I reformated the HD and restored my Vista OS to factory. I
tested a number of new laptops from various manufactures and they all have
the same error message. I called Microsoft support and tier 2 support spent
days then told me that the OEMs are messing up Vista... :-(

Did the OEMs add some spyware or modify the SFC utility? Why isn't there a
fix for this very important repair utility?

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 99% complete.Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files
but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I believe they already have, it will be distributed as part of SP1 through
Windows Update this month (English) or in april (other).

No.

but was unable to fix some of them.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The error with SFC hanging at 99% has been reported multiple times, and
judging from the SP1 feedback I have read, it has now been corrected. By the
way, with this bug you will probably not find any errors reported in the log
file either

If that's true then MSDN is messing up Vista, too. The copies (both 32 and
64 bit) I downloaded from there do the same thing.

Charlie, I have tested this with a new HP Vista Business (64bit - SP1
installed).

SFC fails with the same message. Its not fixed.

Tom, Are any Vista applications getting the appcrash or does your event view
show other corrupt applications?

I get appcrashes on Outlook 2007, iexplorer, explorer, ...
Quickbooks : The description for Event ID 4 from source QuickBooks cannot be
found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your
local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair
the component on the local computer.
(I have reinstalled Quickbooks several times with support from their techs
and they say Vista is the problem.)

MS support says wait for SP1 - SP1 is on the new OEM PCs now shipping and
this is still a major problem.

I am sorry to hear that, I was left with the impression MSFT had gotten this
sorted out.

The first bug reports pointed to KB941600 (an USB components update) as
being the cause of the problem. This is the problem I found on my Vista
machines, SFC worked prior to that update. From what I read in other replies
here, there may be conflicts with other software as well, but I would check
out the USB update on your system first.

I just tested it on my computer with sp1 and KB 941600 installed and SFC
/scannow works fine here.

Hello,
This is fixed with Windows Vista SP1.

That scenario with SFC, the error message is misleading.
SFC is looking a temp folder for some driver files, but they were removed
since they were in a temp folder.
It is not reporting the files are missing from their intended location in
this instance.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

That hasn't been my experience to be honest. Have you checked if the drives
are all from the same batch and thus possibly faulty? Also, SFC will crap
out whenever there is a bad enough sector error that needs to have a chkdsk
/r go over to fix before running sfc. You might try that and then SFC after
that to see if it helps.
