Windows Mail shuts down

Alan

I'm having an issue with Windows Mail shutting down primarily when I click on
a link within an email message. I have run msconfig for clean boot and
problem not resolved. I then ran System File Checker and got the following
message:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Windows\system32>

When I click on C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log, the default Notepad has message
"Access Denied".

Apparently there are some corrupt files that are contributing to my WM
problem, but I can't get to the "details". I'd appreciate some help with
resolving the issue.??

Go to Control Panel | Default programs. Then go to "Associate a file type
or protocol with a specific program" then page down to the protocols and
set the mailto to WinMail and the URL HTTP Protocol to IE. Then see if that
fixes it.

Steve,

The default protocols were found to be WinMail and IE. Please note in this
thread that I previously ran System File Checker and Windows Resource
Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Could
this be contributing to the issue?

You may be seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

In addition to what PA Bear posted, you might try

SFC /scanboot

and that will scan on reboot and might be able to fix the corruption.
