Vista restart fails after installing software

Brand new computer, 3 days old, loaded. PC-cillin Int. Sec. 2007, Vista
Business. Tried to install two different apps, when I try to restart to
complete install, computer just gives me a blank screen, HDD activity light
flashes but nothing else happens. I shut it down, went into safe mode,
restored to state before install, still wouldn't start up. Restored to a day
earlier, starts ok. Try to install second different app. including a new
update, blank screen on restart. Shut it down again, safe mode, uninstall
app., try to restart and another blank screen. In safe mode now, should I do
another restore or am I fighting a losing battle here. Checked one of the
manuf. site for compatability with Vista and, surprise, they say there are no
issues with Vista. I'd hate to think that the only software I can use on this
is what has been preinstalled! Thanks for any help

What about without the PC-cillin suite installed?

What about without the PC-cillin suite installed?

I read great reviews of PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 and since it
was Vista X64-compatible I gave it a try. They offer a 30-day trial.

I uninstalled it after a week or so. It was very unstable.

So now I rely on my hardware firewall, Windows Firewall, Windows
Defender, Avast AntiVirus, good judgment and luck....

That seems like the best security you can have in Windows.

I use ZoneAlarm free version along with Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus free
version along with the LinkSys router's hardware firewall and remain
infection free for years with Windows XP (and previous Windows
versions). Although I'm a savvy and technical user of Windows, this
scenario is not always true for all Windows users.

I did have a laptop running Windows XP Pro for years without any
security software (no anti-virus, anti-spyware, adaware, etc.) and I had
only minor spyware (cookies, etc.) infections. Somehow that laptop had
survived any type of infection for those years and it was always
connected to the Internet. This laptop did stay behind a LinkSys router
firewall, but that was all the security protecting this laptop.

After further investigation, I think one of the restores I performed screwed
up. I found a "Volume Shadow Copy Service used by Sys Restore not working"
message as well as other "faults", including the Windows Installer failed. I
dunno. I restored to the day I got the machine, was able to load one App.
and it restarted. Haven't installed the PC-Cillin yet. Another App. from
Motorola wouldn't install, although it worked on XP and 98SE machines. Very
frustrating on a new box. I noticed there were 11 updates for Vista already.
I had high expectations for Vista. My XP machine has been mint.
Apparently, MS set low expectations and failed to even achieve those! Bill

Just because the software works on XP doesn't mean it will work in Vista.
Go to the software vendors' websites and check on compatibility. Some
software will work but you have to run the installer in compatibility mode,
and many require elevated privileges to install so right click the
installation file and choose run as administrator.

Every new OS has a learning curve, changes in how things are done, hardware
and software compatibility issues, and with vista there is a paradigm shift
in how it works.

Thanks for the info on the compatability mode for installing software. I
never had a need for it, and didn't know about it. However, it worked fine. I
believe the initial problem I had was caused by the PC-Cillin 07 Sec. Suite.
It was the first piece of software I loaded, and, although the computer
worked, subsequent installs of software failed leaving me bewildered,
frustrated and P.O.'D thinking its got to be the new OS. Although you stated
there has been a "paradigm" shift in how the OS works, I'm not sure I'll ever
understand why backwards compatibility is such an issue. As a construction
contractor, it's very hard to estimate jobs not knowing what is hidden inside
a wall, etc. However, why make changes in the OS that increase
non-compatability with past products? It's very difficult to "guess" what
will be, but when you know something works, why make changes that screw that
up? Anyways, here's a catch 22 for you about the PC-Cillin antivirus
software. The vendors box says it's XP compatible, their website says it's
Vista compatible, my computer with Vista Business loaded it and the software
and computer appeared to be working fine, I restored to day one, computer
works fine, tried to install again and now the OS won't install it because
it's not Vista compatible, (did it "learn" something?), and, the
compatibility wizard says it doesn't work with antivirus software. I
downloaded Avast until the vendor gets back to me about what to do now. One
thing I learned, Vista stores info somewhere on virtually everything that
happens. All I have to do now is decipher it. Anyways, thanks again.

Ok Bill, you're welcome. I think MS has gone too far in it's attempts to be
compatible in Vista with legacy programs. Program vendors have had years
to change their practices in how they write programs, but the still insist
on doing things that shouldn't be done.

Programs such as AV programs, burning Apps, etc are different than other
legacy apps. They involve the use of drivers, hence more likely to have
problems in a new OS.
