Vista Premium Shut Down Hang Wireless Network

Hi,

I recently purchased a Dell 531 with Vista Premium. All was well. I
installed a Linksys wireless network, connecting my old Dell XP. Ever since
then my Vista computer hangs when I try to shut down. I'm 99% certain that
it's because of the wireless network but I can't figure it out. Here's the
set up:

Linksys router has cable from modem plugged into it. My Vista plugged into
the router. My XP wireless connected.

This is my first network and I struggled a bit to get the computers to see
each other but the network itself is now working properly. It's just that my
Vista hangs when I try to restart or shut down.

I've seen some other posts that were similar and they seemed to fix it by
unplugging or disabling some network part but I'm having trouble following
exactly what to do.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am not sure it will fix it but it is easy to try:

Control Panel>>System And Management>> Device manager>> Power Management>>
Find Network Adapter >> highlight Your Device >> Check: Allow this Computer
to turn off this device to save power.

Hi,

I appreciate the response but that did not appear to do the trick. Any other
ideas? I get the feeling that it has something to do with my network set up.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include
Vista in your “New†Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to
adding a Vista computer to it.

Hi,

Thanks for the follow up. Yep. I had seen this. That's how I was able to
finally get my network running. But this doesn't address the shut down hang.

Let me ask you something - in my Vista Network and Sharing Center, under my
network it shows:
Access Local and Internet
Connections Local Area Connection
Wireless Network Connection
Signal Strength: Excellent

I get the feeling that I should only have one connection. Either the Local
Area Connection or the Wireless Network Connection. Is that a correct
assumption? Or should I have both. I feel as if having two is causing the
shut down hang.

What do you think?
