i'm running Vista Home Premium on my laptop, 2 gb ram & it freezes. It
freezes more often when left alone for 10-20min. Sometimes when moving the
mouse it freezes. Task mgr. will not open so i have to shut down system. At
times i get a error message & my hd is being scanned.

Even though (or maybe since) it is a new computer, there could be
malware or adware that is running.
First, do a full antivirus scan.
Even though you have 2GB RAM, you did not mention how much memory is
on your video graphics card - I recommend a minimum of 256MB. I would
suggest disbling Aero and see if this makes a difference.
New machines come with a lot of junk/malware go through your installed
programs and see what you don't need and uninstall the junk.
Either through Windows Defender or Start, msconfig.exe, Startup tab
look through the programs that run at Startup and get rid of the junk.
Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Custom
Views -> Administrative Events. Look for errors around the time of the
freeze to see if you can glean anything there.
